In a bold stride aligned with our overarching mission to make world-class gemological education truly accessible across the continent, WGF Project Africa Ethiopia is proud to announce the awarding of 25 full and partial scholarships for our 2024 intake. This marks a remarkable 150% increase in scholarship opportunities compared to our pilot program launched last year, demonstrating our deep commitment to nurturing African talent. These invaluable scholarships are meticulously designed to provide comprehensive support, covering:

Full tuition for our 6-month Gemology Diploma Program, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder promising students from pursuing their dreams.

Laboratory fees and a complete gemological toolkit (valued at $1,200 per student), providing essential hands-on resources from day one.

Industry certification exams through our robust partnership with the World Gem Foundation, granting graduates globally recognized credentials.

Spotlight: Our 2023 Scholarship Cohort

We are honored to introduce a few of the exceptional individuals who form our 2024 scholarship cohort – the trailblazers poised to transform Africa’s gem industry from within:

  1. Peniel Fasika | Ethiopia Our Geology graduate Peniel, envisions a future where African craftsmanship and expertise  shines globally. She articulated her ambition: “I’ll combine traditional skills with certified ethical stones to be part of Africa’s first scholars in the field.” Her creativity and commitment to ethical sourcing will elevate Africa on the international stage.

  2. Mebratu Takele | Ethiopia As a geology graduate with a keen analytical mind, Mebratu is focused on critical challenges. He explained, “This scholarship lets me specialize in detecting treated sapphires – a $500M problem in East African exports.” His expertise will be vital in safeguarding the integrity and value of African gems.

  3. Abel Alemayehu | Ethiopia Hailing from where the opal miner community thrives,  from the rich fields of Wollo, Abel brings invaluable firsthand experience with opals. He shared his motivation: “After watching foreign buyers undervalue our gems for years, I’m learning to grade them properly. My community will finally get fair prices. his dedication embodies the core of our mission.

Selection

Our rigorous Scholar Selection Criteria ensure we empower individuals with both aptitude and integrity:

  • Demonstrated financial need (70% weighting): Prioritizing those for whom this opportunity would be otherwise out of reach.
  • Commitment to ethical gem practices (20% weighting): Fostering a generation dedicated to fair and responsible industry standards.
  • Leadership potential (10% weighting): Identifying individuals who will inspire and drive change in their communities and the broader industry.

Notably, 60% of these prestigious awards went to women and members of artisanal mining communities, reflecting our commitment to inclusive growth and empowering those directly involved at the grassroots level of the gem supply chain.
